DUNSTON UTS (UTS Stadium)

With a few of the lads heading up to Geordieland to watch Newcastle v Barnsley, an offer of a lift and the prospect of a night on the pop was very easy to accept. This meant searching for a game in the Northern League, as there is no way way you'd get me anywhere near St James Park these days.

I've been there many times and the experience is generally a crappy one, usually on the back of my team , Everton, getting pasted, over zealous club stewarding/policing and the general k***head behaviour of certain members of the (car)toon army.

Having scanned the fixture list it was obvious that Dunston v Spennymoor was THE game. On paper, this had all the makings of a cracker, 2nd v 1st and both teams in good form. Sadly it failed to live up to the billing and I witnessed my first goalless game of the season...pah!

It was a tight game played on a very heavy pitch, that was cutting up as the tackles flew in. There was enough incident to maintain interest and the best of chances that were created fell to Spennymoor. However Dunston's defence held firm and a draw was probably a fair result.

The all round experience of the day was good. The welcome was friendly, had a good pint in the social club, the ground was neat & tidy, but, best of all they produced a 48 page programme for just 50p!

I really should attempt to visit more Northern League grounds as the matchday experience is better than anything you'd get at St James Park and, I must also add, Newcastle as a city is an absolutely corking night out!!

The sign bearing the clubs' previous name of Dunston Federation Brewery. They went by this name from 1987 until 2007, but the Federation Brewery was taken over by Scottish & Newcastle brewery and sponsorship was withdrawn. The club is now sponsored by UTS Engineering, hence the new name.
