SOUTH WEST PENINSULA HOP 2010 (part one)

FALMOUTH TOWN, MOUSEHOLE, HAYLE & PENZANCE

I, like quite a few other groundhoppers, spent the Easter weekend down in the South West and taking in games in the quite splendid South West Peninsula League.

This year the games concentrated on teams based in Cornwall. With digs booked in Newquay, it was off down the M5/A38 for a feast of football....

Thursday 1st April 2010
South West Peninsula Premier League
Falmouth Town 4-0 St Blazey
Attendance: 366

The festivities began on Maundy Thursday and a trip to Bickland Park, the fantastic home of Falmouth Town. It turned out to be a routine win for the homesters.  Goals from ex-WBA player Sean Flynn (42) Ryan Fice (54 & 71) and Nigel Thwaites (87) saw off St Blazey.

 11.00am, Friday 2nd April 2010
South West Peninsula League
Division One West
Mousehole 0-0 Porthleven
Attendance: 389

Good Friday started off with an early visit to Lands End, to have the obligatory photo taken at the sign, before heading up the road to Trungle Parc in Mousehole, pronounced mow-zill, and a dreadful goalless draw.

The ground was very basic but the welcome was warm on a very cold and blustery day. The pasties were also top notch!

Bye! Bye! Brolly!

 3.00pm, Friday 2nd April 2010
South West Peninsula League
Division One West
Hayle 2-2 Camelford
Attendance: 402

After a few pre-match beverages in the superb Star Inn in Crowlas (right) it was off to Trevassack Park in Hayle for the second game of the day.

Camelford took the lead after 11 minutes through Andy Boxhall before a brace from Chris Wolstencroft (38 & 49) gave the homesters the lead. Camelford salvaged a draw when substitute Paul Banks equalised from the penalty spot, 8 minutes from time.

The weather also played an interesting role in the match today as it actually hailed during the game. So I'd seen hail at Hayle!

7.45pm, Friday 2nd April 2010
South West Peninsula Premier League
Penzance 2-2 Torpoint Athletic
Attendance: 476

The final game of the day led us to Penlee Park the home of Penzance. As luck would have it, there was a beer festival in a very nearby pub, the First and Last, so pre and post match was spent sampling even more fantastic Cornish ale!

This game was a great advert for the Peninsula league and, in the end, a draw was a fair result. Penzance took the lead on the interval through Richie Rundle before Shane White equalised for the visitors, from the penalty spot, after 69 minutes. Johnny Ludlam restored the homesters lead after 75 minutes before Torpoint levelled in stoppage time when White grabbed his second goal.

A sad hopper!
