Llanllyfni is a small village between Caernaerfon and Porthmadog and they reached the third tier of Welsh football last year. They play at the King George V playing fields in the middle of town and the ground is really just a railed off pitch, with no shelter from the elements, which is just great as it emptied down for most of the day (in fact at one stage it looked like this game may be in doubt because of the surface water, but the trusty pitch fork came to the rescue!). They have had a mixed season and find themselves down amongst the dead men at the bottom of the table, but in no danger of relegation.
Glan Conwy hail from just outside Colwyn Bay, and in stark contrast to Llanllyfni are having a very good season. They have plenty of games in hand and could potentially grab the runners up spot to Bethesda. In fact they were (mathematically) the only team that could stop Bethesda clinching the title until they lost 3-1 at Pwllhelli on Saturday. So, it was all to play for as regards to the visitors.
The game itself was an excellent end-to end affair, which completely turned the form book on its head. Llanllyfni won comfortably in the end by five goals to two, but credit to Glan Conwy they never gave up trying and had plenty of chances themselves. The star of the show was undoubtedly Llanllyfni striker Gavin Davies who bagged all five goals for his team. These included two headers, a free kick, a penalty, and a quite sublime three yard tap-in. He nearly made it a double hat-trick in the dying seconds when he took another free kick which looked like it was heading for the top corner until the Glan 'keeper clawed it away.
As always a visit into deepest Wales never fails to disappoint and now all that was left for me to do was to jump into my car and head to Manchester for The Specials re-union gig...Bernie Rhodes Knows, Don't Argue!!!
