GARDEN VILLAGE & PARC-Y-SCARLETS
Welsh League Division One
Garden Village v Bryntirion Athletic
Attendance: 53 (h/c)
The day started off at Stafford Common, Gorseinon, the home of Garden Village. Today they were taking on Bryntirion Athletic in a Division One clash. It turned out to be a decent enough game in the afternoon sunshine, but it was a routine away win for Bryntirion. Tomos Wellington gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot after fifteen minutes and from then on they were in control of the game.
Garden Village had a great chance to level in the second half but the shot was stopped on the line, cleared up field and Adam Carpenter raced through to score Bryntirion's second. When your luck is out, it's out. After going two goals up, Athletic never looked in any danger of losing this game, though I'm led to believe things were a bit nervy when Lee Rastatter scored very near the end (the groundhopping cardinal sin being committed today by leaving the game a little early, so I actually missed this goal).
There was good reason I left Garden Village early, it was so I could partake in the quick 10 minute dart along the A484 to Llanelli for...
4.30pm Saturday 1st May 2010WELSH FA CUP FINAL
Port Talbot Town v Bangor City
Attendance: 1,250
This game took place at Parc-Y-Scarlets, the home of Llanelli Rugby Club, so this represented a chance to watch a game of football in a brand new stadium that was built to host rugby! What a corking game it turned out to be too.
A true game of two halves. Bangor were by far the better side in the first half and were full value for their two goal interval lead. The opener came after 6 minutes, thanks to a howler by Port 'keeper Lee Kendall. A long punt was chased by Lee Hunt and the goalie completely misjudged the bounce of the ball and it went over him to leave Hunt with a simple tap in. After 15 minutes The Citizens were two up when Jamie Reed glanced home a header from a right wing cross. The Steelmen had plenty of possession, as Bangor played on the counter, but they weren't troubling Paul Smith in the City goal.
In the second half Port Talbot were much improved and deservedly levelled the game. Drew Fahiya pulled a goal back on 58 minutes when he fired home after a neat one-two with Martin Rose. the Steelmen were now beginning to put pressure on the retreating Bangor defence and you could sense the tide of the game turning. It was no surprise when after 85 minutes Liam McCreesh levelled the game from close range. Extra Time seemed inevitable but in the 91st minute Bangor snatched a dramatic winner, Dave Morley heading home Sion Edwards free kick, to claim the cup for the 3rd year running.
The ground was everything you'd expect with a functional new build stadium, but the cushions on the seats were a nice touch. Only one side of the ground was open today, though the atmosphere was still good, a crowd of 1,250 making some noise. As you can imagine though, it was the Bangor fans who left Parc-Y-Scarlets the happiest.
