BORROWASH VICTORIA (The Asterdale Bowl)

A last minute change of mind took me in the direction of my old stomping ground of Derby, or more specifically, Spondon where Borrowash Victoria play their home games. The Vics moved out of Borrowash to this neighbouring village in the mid 1980's when securing a long term lease on, before buying, the Asterdale Bowl (today it is now sponsored and is known as the Watkinson Construction Bowl).

The Vics ply their trade in the recently formed East Midlands Counties League and today it was an all EMCL encounter in the Vase as they took on their opponents from Nottignham, Gedling Town. Both teams had started the season well and only two points separated them in the league, so this looked like it could be a close encounter...wrong!

The game was played in very blustery conditions, but Gedling looked the much better team from the off and the scoreline reflects how comfortable it was for them. First goal came around the half hour mark when Jack Davies headed home. Second was added a few minutes later when a good move down the left allowed Robbie Mawer (who was superb all game) to cross the ball and Phil Bignall tapped home.

The game was over after an hour when Rob Gill finished from 8 yards after a defensive mix up. Bignall completed the rout on 84 minutes when he got the finishing touch, just about on the goaline, for his second of the match. The only blot on the Gedling copy book was when Matt Richards was sent off for kicking out (and it was a hefty kick) after being fouled, this was absolute stupidity as his team was 4-0 to the good and there were only a couple of minutes remaining.

Nice set up at the Asterdale Bowl and the officials were very welcoming and helpful. An enjoyable day was rounded off by a trip to the Harrington Arms in Thulston for a nice half of Tollgates Earl of Harrington.
