FA Cup day today, but the third qualifying round had nothing of interest. Luckily for me, there was a replay from the second qualifying round still to be played, so it was to Moor Lane, the home of Salford City I headed.
The reason this game was still outstanding was due to the financial problems recently expericed by Hyde United. They faced a winding up petition over an Inland Revenue bill for for £35,000 so on second qualifying round day they had no insurance on Ewan Fields, so the game could not take place. The football world rallied round and the money was raised raised, the bill was settled, the club was saved and the game took place on the Tuesday put aside for a potential replay. This match finished 2-2, with Hyde coming from behind twice. Hence, why we are here today.
Salford have not been without their problems too and credit must be given to all at Moor Lane for getting this game on, after a fire at the ground last Sunday destroyed their clubhouse. The clubhouse, complete with its stock and memorabilia, was gutted (today they had a portakabin each for Food, Drink, Shop and Toilets).

One could not come to Salford and pass up the opportunity to pay a visit to the Salford Lads Club, immortalised on the inner sleeve of The Smiths 'The Queen Is Dead' LP and to The Crescent public house, with its seven real ales on draft.
As for the game itself, well that was largely forgettable, especially the first half, which was a complete non-event. The tie was settled seven minutes from time by a great goal from Rhodri Giggs. A long ball over the top was brilliantly controlled, taken on in his stride and coolly finished past the 'keeper. Both teams defences were on top and chances were at a premium. You could argue that Salford just about deserved their victory, as they slightly edged the second half and they were playing a team from two divisions above. Apart from their central defenders, Hyde looked distinctly average.
Salford will now play Blyth Spartans in the next round.
